Exploring DIY Automation and Smart Devices

Hello everyone! I’ve been exploring some interesting projects and devices lately, and I thought I’d share my experiences and thoughts with you all. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, I hope this post inspires you to dive into the world of smart home automation!

DIY Automation with Daikin Units

One of the most exciting projects I’ve undertaken recently is automating my Daikin air conditioning units. While purchasing Daikin’s WiFi extensions seemed like the straightforward solution, the cost and the need for adapters made me rethink my approach. Instead, I opted for a DIY solution using ESPHome and IR remote components. The idea is to keep everything contained within the Daikin units themselves, using Sonoff Mini R2 devices flashed with custom firmware. I’ve soldered some wires to utilize the GPIO pins and connected an IR transmitter. The goal is to power these devices directly from the Daikin units, which I believe is more elegant and less intrusive than having external power sources. I’m curious to hear if others have tried similar setups or if there are potential issues I should be aware of!

Mitsubishi WiFi Controllers in Europe

Another area I’ve been exploring is the use of Mitsubishi air conditioning controllers in Europe. I’ve heard great things about the MelCloud app and its ability to integrate with smart home systems. For those of us in Europe, it’s a fantastic way to manage our AC units remotely and efficiently. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s successfully integrated their Mitsubishi units into their Home Assistant setup—especially tips on API integration or any challenges faced!

Wall Switches and Automation

Switching gears a bit, I’ve also been thinking about how to integrate traditional wall switches into my smart home setup. One of my circuits uses a regular wall switch to control a light, and I’ve been experimenting with using Sonoff devices to detect the switch’s toggles. It’s been a bit of a learning curve, but it’s rewarding to see the switch seamlessly integrate with my automation routines. If anyone has recommendations on wall switches that are particularly suited for this kind of integration, I’d be happy to hear about them!

Community and Collaboration

What I love most about this community is the willingness to share knowledge and experiences. Whether it’s troubleshooting delays in command execution, as mentioned in some of the posts, or seeking advice on integrating new devices, the collective wisdom here is invaluable. I encourage everyone to share their projects, challenges, and successes. Your experiences could be the key to solving someone else’s problem or inspiring their next project!

Final Thoughts

Smart home automation is all about creativity and problem-solving. Whether it’s repurposing existing devices, integrating new technologies, or finding innovative ways to use traditional components, there’s always something new to explore. I’m excited to see how these projects evolve and how the community continues to grow and support one another.

Thank you all for being part of this amazing journey! If you have any questions, tips, or stories to share, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Let’s keep the ideas flowing and continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible with smart home technology!

Cheers,
