Hey everyone, I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation and I’m absolutely fascinated by how much we can automate our daily routines. However, I’ve come across something that’s been keeping me up at night— the complexity of rules when combining multiple events. Let me share my experience and see if others have encountered similar challenges or found innovative solutions.
So, here’s the scenario: I’ve set up a few simple automations, like turning on the living room lights at 10:00 AM and the bedroom lights at 11:00 AM. Easy enough, right? But then I wanted to add presence detection. Now, the lights only turn on if someone is home. That’s cool, but what if someone comes home late? Suddenly, I need to add more rules to account for that. For example, if someone comes home after 10:00 AM, the living room light should turn on, and similarly for the bedroom after 11:00 AM. This quickly starts to feel like a puzzle, and it gets even more complicated when you factor in things like sunset or temperature. Before I know it, I’m looking at a rule explosion—8 rules for sunset alone, and 16 when temperature is added. It’s overwhelming!
I’m curious if there’s a smarter way to handle this without duplicating rules for every condition. Maybe there’s a way to streamline the process or use some advanced features in Home Assistant that I’m not aware of. Has anyone tackled this kind of complexity and found a solution that keeps things manageable? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
On a lighter note, I’ve also been experimenting with integrating different devices and services, and it’s amazing to see how everything can work together seamlessly. The satisfaction of a perfectly timed light turning on or a thermostat adjusting just as I walk in the door is unbeatable. It’s these little moments that make the learning curve totally worth it.
Let’s keep the conversation going! If you’ve got tips, tricks, or just a story about your automation journey, I’d love to hear them. Happy automating! ![]()
