Exploring GE Controller with Z-Wave Dimmers: A Successful Setup Journey

I recently embarked on a journey to integrate my GE 45631 on-the-wall controller with some new Enerwave ZWN-323 plugin dimmers, and I thought I’d share my experience with the community. While the process had its fair share of challenges, it ultimately led to a satisfying solution that enhances my home automation setup.

Initially, I was a bit disappointed when I found that the GE controller couldn’t directly control the dimming levels of my lights. It seemed like I could only toggle the lights on and off, with the dimming level determined by the last setting in my smartphone app. However, after carefully reviewing the GE 45631 instructions, I discovered a workaround by setting up scenes outside of the SmartThings app.

Here’s what I did:

  1. Understanding the Scenes Feature: The GE controller allows you to set up scenes, which essentially let you define specific lighting levels for different occasions. For example, I set one scene for full brightness, another for a softer 70%, and a third for a dim 20% for movie nights.

  2. Setting Up Scenes: The process involved creating routines in the SmartThings app to turn the lights on at specific levels. These routines acted as a bridge to help set up the scenes on the GE controller. It was a bit of a puzzle, but methodically following the steps made it manageable.

  3. Timing and Precision: The trickiest part was ensuring that the dimmer levels were set precisely when pressing the “Add” button on the GE controller. I learned that waiting for the lights to fully adjust before confirming the scene made a significant difference.

  4. Testing and Fine-Tuning: After setting up the scenes, I tested them extensively to ensure they worked as intended. It was incredibly satisfying to see the lights respond smoothly to the GE controller’s rocker switches.

This experience taught me the value of persistence and the importance of thoroughly reading user manuals. While the setup required some trial and error, the end result has greatly improved my home automation experience. I’m now looking forward to exploring more features and perhaps even integrating other devices in the future!
