Recently, I’ve been diving into the latest features of the Home Remote app, particularly the new Google Cast integration in version 3.14.0. It’s been a fantastic journey discovering how seamlessly this integration works with various Google devices. From the Google Home Mini to the Chromecast Ultra, the range of supported devices is impressive, and the functionalities they offer are quite robust.
One of the standout features for me has been the MediaBrowser capability. It allows me to browse through my current playback queue and even access UPnP/DLNA media servers like Plex. While most apps manage their queues internally, it’s still handy to see the items, especially when troubleshooting or switching tracks. I’ve mainly tested this with Plex, but it’s reassuring to know it should work with other media servers too.
Another aspect I’ve been exploring is the MediaControl commands. The ability to play, pause, stop, and skip tracks is pretty standard, but understanding the difference between PowerToggle/PowerOff and Stop was initially confusing. After some digging, I realized that PowerToggle/PowerOff essentially mimics the “Stop Casting” action in the Google Home app, closing the application entirely, whereas Stop just pauses the media without exiting the app. This distinction is useful for creating more precise automations.
I’ve also been experimenting with the updated MediaPlaybackTime functionality. The automatic formatting based on track length is a neat touch, making it easier to integrate with slider controls for seeking. It’s these small improvements that really enhance the user experience.
Overall, the Google Cast integration in Home Remote has added a new layer of convenience to my smart home setup. It’s empowering to have such detailed control over my media devices directly from the app. I’m curious to see how this integration evolves in future updates and what new features might be added.
If anyone else is exploring this integration or has tips on optimizing its use, I’d love to hear your experiences! Let’s continue to make our smart homes even smarter together.
