Exploring Google Cast Integration in My Smart Home Setup

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my experience with the new Google Cast support in Home Remote. It’s been a fantastic addition to my setup, and I’ve been able to create some pretty cool custom hybrid tiles for my ChromeCast devices. Here’s how I’ve been using it:

  1. Custom Tiles for Seamless Control - I’ve set up custom tiles for my ChromeCast devices, which include both the TV and audio setups. The round Cast icons on these tiles are actually buttons that trigger my Logitech Harmony activities. This means pressing the tile turns on the TV, AV amplifier, and sets the input to the correct source for casting. It’s super convenient!

  2. Volume Control and Playback Management - One thing I noticed was that controlling the volume through Harmony IR wasn’t straightforward. I ended up adding Up/Down buttons next to the slider to manage the amplifier volume separately. The slider still controls the ChromeCast device’s volume, and the Mute button works as expected. I also added a Stop button to halt casting playback, which is really handy.

  3. Device Status and Playback Details - When a ChromeCast device is off, pressing the tile displays a “Device is off” banner, and I can use the power button on the details page to turn it on. When content is casting, I get a detailed view with Pause/Play and Stop buttons. It’s great for keeping an eye on what my daughter is watching!

  4. Google Home Speaker Integration - For my Google Home speakers and ChromeCast Audio devices, I’ve set up separate groups. The Google Home icons are just placeholders, while the ChromeCast Audio icons are buttons that control the amplifier switches via Vera. The volume slider adjusts the speaker volume, and I’ve added a Stop button for audio playback.

  5. Media Apps Group - I’ve also created a group for launching Android apps, which adds another layer of convenience to my setup.

This integration has really streamlined my media experience, and I love how customizable it is. If anyone has tips or tricks for enhancing Google Cast setups, I’d love to hear them!
