Exploring Hardware Choices for Smart Home Automation

Hello everyone, I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation and wanted to share my experiences and ask for your insights. Over the past year, I transitioned from a Vera system to openHab running on a Raspberry Pi. It was a smooth transition, and the Pi’s low power consumption and UPS support were great for reliability. However, recently I decided to move openHab to a PC-based Linux server for better performance and simplicity in management.

Now I’m faced with a dilemma. The Raspberry Pi is powered by a UPS, so it stays online during power outages, which is reassuring. The modem and router are also connected, so it can alert me even when I’m away. On the other hand, the PC-based server consumes significantly more power and isn’t on a UPS, which makes me a bit nervous about power reliability.

I’m curious to know how others have set up their hardware. Are there any innovative power management strategies or backup solutions you’ve implemented? I’d love to hear about your experiences and any tips you might have for balancing performance and reliability in a smart home setup. Thanks in advance for your insights!
