I’ve recently started my journey into the world of smart home automation, and I wanted to share my experiences and ask for some advice. I’ve been using a Fritz SmartGateway for a while, but it just didn’t meet my expectations for a robust system. That’s why I decided to switch to Home Assistant running on my QNAP NAS, paired with a Raspberry Pi 4 for Docker and Zigbee2MQTT.
So far, the setup has been quite promising. I’ve managed to integrate a variety of devices, from IKEA and Hue lights to Aqara sensors and Sonoff switches. However, I’m facing some challenges with Zigbee coverage, especially in a multi-story home. I’ve heard that placing SLZB-06 coordinators on each floor can help, but I’m not entirely sure about the best practices for this setup.
I’d love to hear from others who have successfully implemented similar systems. What MQTT broker do you recommend? I was thinking of Mosquitto, but I’m open to suggestions. Also, how do you handle device discovery and pairing? Any tips on optimizing the network for reliability would be greatly appreciated!
Looking ahead, I’m excited about integrating Alexa and Apple HomeKit, but first things first—I need to get Zigbee2MQTT running smoothly. If anyone has tips or experiences to share, I’d love to hear them! Happy smart home tinkering everyone! ![]()
