After years of searching for the perfect home automation system, I’ve finally found a setup that truly impresses me. My journey began with Alexa, but it unfortunately fell short of my expectations. I then turned to Apple and Google systems, which offered some functionality but lacked the seamless integration I was hoping for. Most of my automation efforts were spread across HomeKit and various app-specific solutions, such as controlling my bathroom blinds with the Velux app or scheduling lights with the TP-Link Kasa app. While these worked individually, the lack of a unified platform was frustrating.
Recently, I decided to give HomeAssistant a try. The initial setup was a bit daunting. The device itself is surprisingly small, and finding the right spot in my home proved challenging. After some consideration, I settled on placing it in the corner of my living room, connected via ethernet for stability. The onboarding process was a mix of triumphs and hurdles. While my Mac struggled to detect the device, my iPhone 15 Pro Max, running iOS 17.2 beta, managed to connect after some tweaking. The interface wasn’t perfectly optimized for my phone, requiring frequent zoom adjustments, but it eventually worked.
Integrating my Hue lights was a rocky start, but once that was sorted, adding TP-Link Kasa devices went smoothly. Setting up a dashboard was another learning curve, but I managed to get everything running. The real breakthrough came when I linked my HomeKit devices through HomeAssistant, allowing them to work seamlessly with my Apple ecosystem. This integration has been a game-changer, and I’m now confident enough to remove my old HomeBridge setup.
While there’s still work to be done on automations, the progress so far has been incredibly rewarding. HomeAssistant’s flexibility and community support have been invaluable. I’m excited to continue refining my setup and exploring new possibilities. To anyone considering a similar journey, I’d say dive in—it’s worth the effort!
