Exploring Multi-Hub Strategies and Device Integration

As I continue to expand my home automation setup, I’ve been diving into the world of multi-hub strategies and device integration. It’s an exciting journey, but it comes with its own set of challenges and questions. Let me share my experiences and thoughts so far.

The Multi-Hub Experiment

I currently have three hubs set up in my home: one upstairs controlling Z-Wave and Zigbee devices, another on the main floor handling basement and main devices, and a third designated as a controller hub for apps and services. This setup was inspired by seeing others separate their hubs by protocol or area, aiming to enhance stability and reduce interference.

With two hubs, things were simpler—I used Hubitat’s hub link and kept virtual switches minimal. But adding a third hub has made me rethink how I distribute apps and services. Apps like APIXU weather and Nest seem perfect for the controller hub, freeing up processing power for the client hubs. However, I’m still figuring out the best way to manage rules and ensure optimal performance across all hubs.

Device Integration Challenges

Another area I’ve been exploring is integrating legacy devices. My house has old wired contact switches from an ADT system, and I’d love to utilize them without the visible magnetic sensors. I’ve been researching multi-channel Z-Wave or Zigbee hubs that can connect to these switches, ideally hardwired to avoid batteries. While I’m open to buying sensors like Schlage, building a custom board is also on my radar if it proves feasible.

Seeking Advice

I’d love to hear from others who’ve tackled similar setups. How do you manage multiple hubs? What strategies have worked best for you in terms of app distribution and rule management? Also, if anyone has experience with integrating wired contact switches or building custom boards, I’d be grateful for any guidance or resources.

Looking Ahead

The possibilities with multi-hub strategies and device integration are endless, and it’s thrilling to see how technology can enhance our daily lives. Whether it’s improving home security, streamlining automation, or simply making life more convenient, the journey is as rewarding as the destination.

Let’s keep the conversation going! I’m eager to learn from your experiences and insights.
