Exploring Next Steps in SmartHome Automation: Ideas and Recommendations?

Hi everyone! I hope this message finds you all well. I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation over the past few weeks, and it’s been an absolute blast! I’ve managed to upgrade my home with LED lights controlled by SmartThings dimmers, set up motion detectors to keep things illuminated in the early morning, and even integrated a sensor on my garage door to alert me if it’s left open. It’s amazing how these little tweaks have made my life more convenient and secure.

One of my favorite projects has been repurposing an old cell phone as a bedside control unit. It’s such a neat way to manage my smart devices without needing another dedicated device. I’ve also tinkered with smart plugs for my low-voltage lighting system, creating a sunrise/sunset-based schedule that’s both energy-efficient and visually appealing. Speaking of which, I wrote my own “Wake Up” routine because the default options in the SmartThings app didn’t quite hit the mark. It’s been a fun challenge to customize something that fits my lifestyle perfectly!

Now, as I look to the future, I’m curious about what’s next. I’ve heard so much about advanced video doorbells that can support multiple tenants with unlock options, but I’m not sure where to start. I’d love to find a system that’s easy to integrate and reliable. Another area I’m exploring is sprinkler controllers. I’ve seen some at Home Depot, but they all seem to have their own apps, which I’d rather avoid. I’m hoping there’s a solution that plays nicely with SmartThings.

I’m also thinking about upgrading my garage door setup. I’ve heard that using a low-voltage switch configuration with a relay can be a good option, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the investment. I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether there’s a more elegant solution out there.

Lastly, I’m on the hunt for some good exterior cameras. I tried Arlo, but they were too expensive and didn’t deliver the quality I was hoping for. I’d love to find something that’s affordable yet effective, ideally with integration into SmartThings so I can automate lighting and other responses when someone approaches my home.

This community has been such a wealth of knowledge, and I’m really grateful for all the insights I’ve gained so far. I can’t wait to see what projects I’ll tackle next and how you all might inspire me along the way!

I haven’t implemented any of the suggestions im about to provide, but very much hope to do so in the future once I figure out a somewhat “optimal” system where device from various companies work together at least to a degree that I find satisfactory. I’ll try to keep my suggestions to Aqara products to hopefully. make things a little easier/clear.

Here are a few ides that I’ve heard other people implement that piqued my interest. 1) using vibration sensors to alert you of things such as mail being delivered this could also be combined with sometime such as changing the color or specific lights to indicate things such a package delivery etc.

The vibration sensor could also work for something like laundry, letting you know when it is complete after it stops being activated.

If you happen to be prone to minor forgetfulness at time, (I am quite guilty in this realm my myself), altering the appearance of lights or other accessories on a schedule so that evenly Wednesday for example, pie or your lights remains green until you remember that it’s trash day and you need to take care of that. Then of course swap it back to normal when you complete the task!

Essentially, just try to implement whatever sort consistent reminder works to jog your memory to sure you tackle whatever tasks are on tyirbagenda.

That’s a really nice setup and I like the idea of using an old phone as a control hub, that’s smart. With the latest Aqara Advanced Bridge and Matter support, you can now share almost any trigger or scene between ecosystems, which makes your setup a lot more flexible.

If you ever look into upgrading some parts, a few Aqara options could fit really well. For example, the Aqara Video Doorbell G4 works great with HomeKit, Alexa, Google and now Matter, and it can trigger lights or announcements through automations when someone rings or approaches. For exterior cameras, the G4 is a solid choice if you want something affordable that still integrates fully with your existing sensors.

For your garage project, the Aqara Relay T2 might be worth checking out. It supports both low-voltage control and smart automations, so you could open or close the door automatically when your phone arrives home or when your E1 camera detects motion nearby.

As for lighting or sprinkler systems, you could easily run them with Aqara Relay T2, using sunrise or weather conditions as triggers through the Aqara app.

You’ve already got a solid foundation, and with Matter and the Advanced Bridge, it’s now easier than ever to keep everything under one roof without losing compatibility.
