Exploring NFC/RFID for Efficient Presence Detection

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying my experience with Home Assistant, particularly using the HASS Custom Alarm Interface. However, I’ve encountered a challenge with my current presence detection setup. It seems a bit slow in disarming the alarm before it triggers, which could be inconvenient for my wife. I’d love to find a seamless solution that avoids the need for a keypad, as I’m concerned it might lead to the system being dismantled over time.

Currently, I’m relying on Life360 and Monitor for presence detection. Monitor used to be incredibly fast, but now it’s lagging behind Life360 by a few minutes. I’m using default settings on a clean install, and even switching between the beta and master branches hasn’t resolved the issue. This got me thinking—what if I integrated an NFC sensor next to the door lock? The idea is that as someone approaches to unlock the door, the NFC sensor on their keychain would trigger and notify Home Assistant to disarm the alarm automatically.

I’m curious if anyone else has implemented a similar setup or has insights to share. This could be a game-changer for enhancing the user experience with our smart home systems. Any feedback or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
