Exploring Nuki Lock Integration for a Seamless Smart Home Experience

As I embark on my latest smart home project, I’m thrilled to share my journey with the Nuki lock system. My goal is to create a seamless entry experience for our new house, integrating both the front gate and front door with a touch of modern convenience. Here’s how I’m approaching this project and the questions I’m pondering along the way.

The Vision
Imagine arriving home and entering a code on a keypad next to the Nest Hello doorbell. This triggers the electric strike lock on the front gate, allowing it to swing open. From there, a short walk through the garden brings you to the front door, where another Nuki lock awaits. The setup feels like something straight out of a futuristic movie, but it’s entirely achievable with the right planning.

The Setup

  1. Front Gate: An electronic strike lock will control the gate. A Nuki keypad will be installed alongside the Nest Hello, ensuring a smooth entry process.
  2. Front Garden: To overcome Bluetooth range limitations, an Opener will be placed in a waterproof housing, approximately 2 meters from the front gate. This Opener will wirelessly connect to a Bridge inside the front door.
  3. Front Door: A Nuki Doorlock will be installed, paired with a nearby Bridge for internet control. This ensures seamless integration with the rest of the smart home ecosystem.
  4. Hallway: Another Opener will be placed here, connecting via Bluetooth to the front door Bridge. This will allow for a centralized control system, enabling the gate to be opened from inside the house.

The Questions

  • Can one Opener be connected to another to control the electric strike effectively?
  • What’s the expected time lag from entering the keypad code to the gate releasing?
  • Is it better to use two Bridges—one for inside and one for outside—to ensure a fail-safe system?

Why Nuki?
Nuki stands out for its reliability and integration capabilities. The ability to control locks via a keypad, smartphone, or even voice commands is a game-changer. Plus, the support for multiple Bridges and Openers makes it ideal for complex setups like mine.

Next Steps
I’m currently researching the best cable options for connecting the Openers and ensuring a stable Bluetooth connection. I’m also exploring the possibility of automating the entire entry process, from the gate opening to the lights turning on as I approach.

If anyone has experience with similar setups or insights into optimizing this configuration, I’d love to hear from you! Let’s make this smart home project a success together. :rocket:
