Exploring OpenHAB Security Alarm Project: Challenges and Insights

I’ve been diving into the world of OpenHAB lately, and it’s been an incredible journey! From setting up weather bindings to geofencing with OwnTracks, I’ve learned so much about the platform’s flexibility and power. Now, I’m excited to share my recent project: a security alarm system that I’ve been working on.

The project started with a clear goal: create a reliable alarm system using a mix of Z-Wave and MySensors hardware. I’ve set up reed switches for windows and doors, paired with PIR motion sensors and presence detection for myself and my family. The outputs include a siren/strobe, email notifications, and OpenHAB alerts.

One challenge I’ve encountered is ensuring the system doesn’t activate in ‘ON’ or ‘Internal’ modes when the Alarmenable item is turned off. I’ve been tweaking the rules to make sure the system remains responsive yet configurable. For instance, I’ve set up rules to monitor window and door statuses, as well as motion sensor inputs, to automatically enable or disable the alarm based on the environment.

The sitemap has been a fun part of the project, allowing me to create a user-friendly interface for managing the alarm modes and statuses. I’ve also integrated presence detection to remind family members to arm the system when they leave.

While I’m still fine-tuning some aspects, I’m thrilled with how far I’ve come. This project has not only improved my skills in OpenHAB but also given me a deeper appreciation for the platform’s customization potential. If anyone has tips or suggestions, I’d love to hear them! :rocket:

Cheers,
George
