Exploring Smart Home Automation with Chromecast and Beyond

Hello everyone! I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation lately, and I wanted to share some of my experiences and questions with you all.

First off, I’ve been playing around with the Chromecast integration in my setup. I discovered that the Chromecast binding doesn’t support sendCommand(NEXT) to skip to the next track. I read about an approach of reading the track length and then scrubbing to the length - 1s. Or calling out to an external program like go-chromecast. How have other’s solved jumping to the next track in their rules? I’m curious to hear your solutions!

On another note, I’ve been thinking about adding some balcony lighting for the summer. I came across the hashtag #SummerModeOn and it got me excited about creating a cozy outdoor space. I’m wondering if anyone has tips on choosing the right lighting that’s both energy-efficient and stylish. Maybe some smart bulbs that can change colors or brightness based on the time of day?

Speaking of lighting, I’ve been trying to set up a scene that activates at sunset. I want my outdoor lights to turn on automatically when the sun dips below a certain elevation. I’ve configured a trigger with sun.elevation below -6.0 but I’m concerned it might activate constantly. How do I ensure it only triggers once when the sun crosses that threshold? Any advice would be appreciated!

I also wanted to mention that I’ve been exploring different DIY projects to enhance my smart home setup. It’s been a fun way to get creative and customize my space. I’d love to hear what types of DIY projects others are working on or have completed. Whether it’s something simple like adding smart plugs or more complex projects like building a custom voice-controlled device, I’m all ears!

Lastly, I’ve been looking into integrating more devices from various brands. I’m curious how others manage to seamlessly connect and control devices from different ecosystems. Is there a preferred method or tool that simplifies this process? I’m still learning the ropes, so any insights would be invaluable.

Thank you all for sharing your knowledge and experiences. It’s inspiring to see the creativity and innovation within the community. Looking forward to hearing from you all!
