Exploring Smart Home Automation with IKEA Tradfri and Homey

Hello everyone, I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation recently, and it’s been an exciting journey! I started with IKEA Tradfri devices, which have been a great foundation for my setup. One of my main goals is to create a seamless lighting system that integrates with motion sensors and follows the natural light cycle. Here’s what I’ve been working on and what I’ve discovered along the way.

My Current Setup

  • 4 IKEA Tradfri lamps grouped together for zone-based control.
  • 1 IKEA Tradfri motion sensor to trigger the lights when needed.
  • Homey as my central hub, paired with apps like Zonnestanden for sunrise/sunset tracking and Zone Memory for saving scenes.

What I Want to Achieve

  1. Scheduling the Lights: I want the lights in my hallway to turn on automatically around sunset, specifically 30 minutes before it gets dark. This would make evenings much more convenient!
  2. Adjusting Brightness: If the lights are already on but below 50% brightness, I’d like them to boost to 50% when motion is detected. It’s all about creating the perfect ambiance.
  3. Auto-Dimming or Turning Off: After a set period of inactivity, the lights should either dim back down or turn off completely. This would save energy and ensure the lights aren’t left on unnecessarily.

Challenges and Learning

  • Integration with Apps: I’ve been experimenting with different apps to see how they can work together to achieve these goals. It’s a bit overwhelming with so many options, but I’m slowly figuring it out.
  • Timing and Delays: One thing I’ve noticed is that sometimes there’s a slight delay in the motion sensor detecting movement. I’m curious if others have experienced this and how they’ve resolved it.

Tips and Tricks

  • Scene Creation: Using Zone Memory, I’ve created a few scenes for different times of the day. It’s been really helpful in managing the lighting without manual adjustments.
  • Regular Updates: Keeping my Homey firmware updated has been crucial. I’ve noticed improvements in performance and compatibility with each update.

Looking Ahead

I’m really excited to see how this setup evolves. I’d love to hear from others who have similar systems or have tackled these kinds of automation challenges. What apps or configurations have worked well for you? Any advice on fine-tuning the timing and brightness adjustments would be invaluable!

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your insights and experiences!
