After several years of experimenting with Home Assistant (HA), I’ve become increasingly impressed with its flexibility and adaptability. The ability to automate nearly every aspect of my home has been revolutionary, and I’m always on the lookout for new ways to enhance my setup. One feature I’ve been particularly interested in is integrating real-time travel data using Waze, especially for my morning commute. While I’ve managed to set up various automations, the absence of a dedicated Waze Travel Time plugin has been a minor inconvenience.
I’ve explored using third-party integrations and scripts to fetch travel time data from Waze’s API, but it’s been a bit of a workaround. Ideally, having a built-in sensor that automatically updates travel times based on predefined routes would streamline my morning routine. For instance, waking up to an estimated travel time display on my Lovelace dashboard would be incredibly useful. I’m hopeful that the community might take on this project, as it seems like a valuable addition to HA’s capabilities.
In the meantime, I’ve been experimenting with Node-RED to pull Waze data and display it within HA. It’s a bit involved, but it’s been a great learning experience. I’d love to hear if anyone else has tackled this or has suggestions on how to make this integration smoother. The potential to combine real-time traffic data with smart home automation is immense, and I’m excited to see how this could evolve in the future. Thanks to everyone contributing to the HA community—your work continues to inspire and enable projects like mine!
