Exploring Smart Home Automation with Wyze Cam and Home Assistant
Hello fellow smart home enthusiasts!
I wanted to share my recent experiences with integrating the Wyze Cam Outdoor and Home Assistant into my smart home setup. It’s been an exciting journey with some challenges along the way, but I’ve learned a lot!
Wyze Cam Outdoor: A Solid Choice with a Quirk
I’ve been using the Wyze Cam Outdoor for several months now, and it’s been a reliable addition to my security setup. The video quality is great, and the motion detection is sensitive enough to catch even the slightest movements. However, after a recent firmware update, I noticed something peculiar—my camera started recording and sending notifications non-stop, draining the battery in just a few hours! ![]()
I tried everything from cleaning the lens with a q-tip to turning it off and on again, but the issue persisted. It seemed like the camera was stuck in an endless loop of detecting ‘phantom movements’ even when there was nothing in sight. After some research, I found that others had reported similar issues, but it’s reassuring to know that Wyze is likely aware of this and will hopefully address it in a future update.
Home Assistant: A Powerhouse for Custom Automation
On the other hand, my experience with Home Assistant has been nothing short of amazing. I’ve been using it to manage my smart devices, including my Wyze Cam, and it’s been a breeze to set up. One feature I’ve been particularly impressed with is the ability to monitor and control my devices remotely through the MQTT protocol. However, I ran into a small hiccup when trying to display real-time power usage from my smart plugs.
At first, I could only see the cumulative energy consumption in kWh, which wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. After a bit of digging through the settings, I discovered that the power sensor was tucked away in the diagnostics section. With a little tweak in the configuration, I was able to bring it out into the main dashboard. Now, I can monitor my energy usage in real-time, which has been incredibly helpful for optimizing my home’s energy consumption! ![]()
