Exploring Smart Home Automation with Wyze Cams and OpenHAB

Hey everyone, I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation lately, and I wanted to share some of my experiences and lessons learned. I’ve been using Wyze cameras for monitoring my driveway and pond, but I’ve run into some challenges with motion detection sensitivity. Let me walk you through my journey and maybe we can brainstorm some solutions together!

First off, I’ve got a mix of WyzeCam v2, v3, and v4 units scattered around my property. They’ve been great for casual monitoring, but when it comes to detecting specific events like herons visiting my koi pond, they’ve fallen short. I’ve tried tweaking the sensitivity settings, even experimenting with detection zones, but nothing seems to work consistently. It’s frustrating because the cameras do pick up other movements, like people or wind-blown trees, just not the herons.

One of the more amusing moments was when a heron paid a visit, and the camera didn’t trigger any notifications. Instead, another camera nearby tagged an unrelated event as “Vehicle” and “Pet,” which was both confusing and slightly amusing. It’s clear that the algorithm has some limitations, but I’m curious if there are any workarounds or settings I might have missed.

I’ve also been exploring OpenHAB for more advanced automation. Setting up MQTT for my Shelly devices was a breeze, but integrating everything seamlessly has been a learning curve. I’ve managed to get some rules working, like adjusting thermostat settings based on my calendar, but there’s always room for improvement. For instance, I’d love to automate timelapse creation for my pond cam to review missed events without manually checking footage every day.

If anyone has tips on improving motion detection accuracy or suggestions for better automation setups, I’d be thrilled to hear them! Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other optimize our smart home setups. :grinning:
