Exploring Smart Home Integration: MQTT, Notifications, and Device Tracking

I’ve been diving into the world of smart home integration lately, and it’s been quite the journey! From setting up MQTT for room presence tracking to experimenting with different notification systems, there’s so much to explore. Let me share some of my experiences and insights.

First off, I’ve been using MQTT with room-assistant on a bunch of Raspberry Pis to track my location. It’s been working wonders for creating template sensors, but I’m curious if it can also function as a device tracker. I tried the MQTT device tracker, but nothing showed up, which was a bit puzzling. I wonder if this setup is suitable when the topics are specific to rooms like bedroom or living room instead of broader home/away statuses. If anyone has successfully integrated MQTT for both presence and device tracking, I’d love to hear about your setup!

Another area I’ve been exploring is the notification system in SmartThings. While it’s come a long way, I still find the lack of customizable notification types a bit limiting. For instance, having separate notifications for home monitoring, hub status, and custom automations would make managing my smart home much more efficient. I’ve been using multiple apps to compensate, but it’s not ideal. I’m hopeful that future updates will introduce more advanced notification categories, similar to how apps like Messenger handle notifications with different sounds and priorities.

On the hardware side, I’ve been experimenting with Govee’s RGBIC TV Light Bars. The H6046 model, in particular, has been a great addition to my setup. It’s slim, sleek, and the fact that it has a G-shaped cutout that glows with the light’s color is a nice touch. I’m currently testing how well it syncs with my TV and if it can be used interchangeably with the H6054 model, which has a built-in camera. Early results are promising, but I’ll share more details once I’ve completed my testing.

One challenge I’ve encountered is with energy reporting smart plugs. I’m looking for plugs that integrate seamlessly with the SmartThings app without requiring custom code. It’s frustrating to see so many options with great features in their own apps but limited support in SmartThings. If anyone knows of reliable models that work out of the box or have custom DTHs that are up to date, I’d be grateful for the recommendations!

Lastly, I’ve been exploring the integration of various sensors and devices into my ecosystem. From IKEA’s Tradfri lamps to Xiaomi’s motion sensors, it’s been a learning experience figuring out what works best together. One issue I’ve faced is with the Conbee 2 stick not pairing IKEA lights and dimmers. After hours of troubleshooting, I’m still not sure if it’s a firmware issue or something else. If anyone has similar experiences or solutions, I’d love to hear about them!

Overall, the journey into smart home integration has been rewarding, even with its challenges. It’s a constantly evolving space, and I’m excited to see how it continues to grow and improve. If you’ve got tips, tricks, or experiences to share, drop them in the comments below—I’m always eager to learn and improve my setup!
