Exploring Smart Home Integration with iPhone WiFi Presence Sensor

Hi everyone! I’ve been really diving into the world of smart home integration lately, and I wanted to share some of my experiences and thoughts with you all. One of the most interesting projects I’ve been working on is integrating my iPhone with Hubitat using the iPhone WiFi Presence Sensor. It’s been a fascinating journey, and I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences with similar setups!

First off, I came across this virtual presence sensor that checks if my iPhone is on the WiFi network. The idea is pretty cool—it uses the iPhone’s presence on the network to determine if I’m home or not. However, I quickly realized that iPhones can put their WiFi to sleep, which means this sensor isn’t foolproof. But, it’s a great supplement to other presence sensors I have in place. I’ve been using it alongside my Ring doorbell and some motion sensors, and it’s been working beautifully so far!

One thing I wanted to mention is the installation process. It wasn’t too bad, but I had to make sure to disable the “Private Address” feature on my iPhone after updating to iOS 14. Without that step, the sensor wouldn’t work properly. I followed the Hubitat Package Manager installation guide, which made things much smoother. If you’re looking to set this up, I’d highly recommend using the package manager to avoid any manual code pasting hassles.

Now, thinking about compatibility, I know this sensor was primarily designed for iPhones, but I’ve heard from a few users that it works with certain Android devices too. While I don’t have an Android phone myself, it’s great to see that the community is finding ways to make this work across different platforms. It really speaks to the flexibility of Hubitat’s ecosystem.

I’ve also been experimenting with how this sensor integrates with other smart home devices. For example, I’ve set it up to trigger some scenes when I’m detected as “present.” Whether it’s turning on lights or adjusting the thermostat, it’s been a seamless experience. It’s amazing how these small integrations can make your home feel so much smarter and more connected.

One thing I’m curious about is how others are using this sensor in combination with other presence detection methods. Do you rely solely on one method, or do you mix and match like I do? I’d love to hear about your setups and any tips you might have for optimizing presence detection. It’s always great to learn from the community!

Lastly, I wanted to mention that while this project has been a lot of fun, it’s also been a learning experience. Debugging issues, like the one with the private address feature, taught me a lot about how these sensors work and how to troubleshoot effectively. It’s a reminder that even the most seemingly simple integrations can have their quirks, but with a little research and patience, you can overcome them.

Thank you all for reading, and I hope this post inspires someone to give the iPhone WiFi Presence Sensor a try or share their own experiences with presence detection. Let’s keep the smart home conversation going! :rocket:
