Exploring Smart Home Solutions: Shelly, Govee, and Yeelight Insights

As a new member of the smart home community, I’ve been diving into various devices and platforms to create a seamless and efficient home environment. Here’s a quick rundown of my experiences and some tips I’ve picked up along the way!

Shelly Integration: A Few Hiccups, But Worth It

I recently added a Shelly EM to track my electricity usage. While the setup seemed straightforward, I encountered some issues connecting it to my smartphone app. The process involved creating a new room, selecting my router, and entering credentials, but the Shelly EM wasn’t consistently detected. After several resets and retries, I managed to connect it successfully. Now, it’s running smoothly and providing valuable insights into my energy consumption!

Govee Buttons: Automating My Living Room

I’m using Govee 6-button remotes to control my living room lights. One feature I’d love to see is the ability to specify the scene direction (e.g., towards the center or away) when automating the lights. Currently, it defaults to “forward,” which isn’t my preferred setting. If this could be adjusted within the automation steps, it would make my setup even more personalized!

Yeelight: A Mix of Success and Challenges

My Yeelight 1 (YL1) has been a fantastic addition, working flawlessly with my automations. However, my Yeelight 2 (YL2) has been problematic—it shows as “Unavailable” in the Home Assistant frontend. Despite resetting it multiple times and checking its network connection, the issue persists. It’s frustrating because both bulbs work perfectly in the Yeelight app. If anyone has encountered this and found a solution, I’d be grateful for the advice!

Tips for Newbies

For those just starting out, here are a few tips:

  • Read Reviews: Look for forums and user experiences before purchasing devices.
  • Check Compatibility: Ensure your devices are compatible with your ecosystem (e.g., Home Assistant, Alexa).
  • Experiment: Don’t be afraid to try different configurations and automations. Learning by doing is the best way to master smart home setups!
