Exploring Smart Lighting and Automation with Shelly Devices

As someone who’s always been fascinated by the potential of smart home technology, I’ve been diving into the world of Shelly devices over the past few months. It’s been an incredible journey, and I wanted to share some of my experiences and insights with the community.

One of the first projects I tackled was setting up a dimmer system using a Shelly Dimmer. Out of the box, it worked perfectly with a single button in momentary mode, allowing me to control the lights with simple taps and holds for dimming. However, I quickly realized that I wanted to expand this setup to include multiple wall-mounted buttons throughout my living space. This led me to explore the idea of using additional Shelly devices as command senders, which could communicate with the central dimmer.

After some research and experimentation, I discovered that it was indeed possible to use Shelly 2,5 units behind a double switch to control two separate dimmers independently. This setup not only streamlined my lighting controls but also added a layer of redundancy, ensuring that I could always access my lights from any part of the room.

One challenge I encountered was ensuring consistent communication between all the devices. I found that placing the Shelly units strategically and using their MQTT capabilities was key to maintaining a seamless connection. I also had to tweak some settings in the Shelly app to optimize the response times, which made a significant difference in the overall user experience.

If I were to offer any advice to someone looking to undertake a similar project, it would be to start small and gradually scale up. Begin with a single dimmer and a couple of buttons, test the setup thoroughly, and then expand as needed. This approach not only helps in identifying potential issues early on but also allows for a more personalized configuration.

Overall, my experience with Shelly devices has been overwhelmingly positive. They’ve transformed my home into a more convenient and enjoyable space, and I’m excited to continue exploring the possibilities they offer. If anyone has questions or needs guidance on similar projects, feel free to reach out—I’d be happy to help!
