Exploring Smart Lighting and Security Automation in Homey

As a new member of the Homey community, I’m thrilled to dive into the world of smart home automation. After spending some time exploring the platform, I wanted to share my experiences and some questions I’ve encountered along the way.

One feature I’m particularly excited about is the ability to schedule devices based on sunset or sunrise. I’ve heard that HomeWizard allows setting devices to turn on 10 minutes before sunset, and I’m curious if Homey offers a similar functionality. This would be perfect for my outdoor lights, ensuring they come on just in time as the day turns to night.

Another area I’ve been exploring is smart lighting integration. I recently added some LIFX bulbs to my setup, and while I love their color and brightness options, I’m struggling to find a reliable wall switch or remote control for them. I’ve been using Alexa for control, but it’s not ideal in areas where I don’t have an Echo device. Has anyone found a good alternative for a battery-powered switch that works seamlessly with LIFX and SmartThings?

Security automation is another topic that’s been on my mind. I’ve heard some users mention issues with their SHM security systems randomly switching between armed and disarmed states, which can be both annoying and concerning. I’d love to hear from others who might have encountered this and how they resolved it. Stability in security systems is crucial, so any insights would be greatly appreciated.

On a more positive note, I’ve been experimenting with creating custom scenes and automations. For instance, I set up my hallway lights to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise, which has been a nice touch. I’m also looking into using templates in Lovelace to display real-time data more effectively. While I’ve had some success, I’m still learning the ropes when it comes to more complex configurations.

I’d love to hear from fellow enthusiasts about their experiences with scheduling, lighting integration, and security automation. What tips or tricks have you found most useful? Any shared wisdom would be invaluable as I continue to build out my smart home setup.

To all the veterans out there, thank you for your guidance and for making this community such a welcoming place for newcomers like me. Here’s to many more exciting projects and discoveries ahead!
