Exploring Smart Lighting Automation for My Basement

Hey everyone, I’m diving into the world of smart home automation, and I’m thrilled to share my journey with you. I recently upgraded my basement lighting with LIFX bulbs and installed an IRIS motion sensor to control them. My goal is to create a seamless lighting experience for my kids when they play downstairs. Here’s what I’m aiming for:

  1. Motion-Activated Lighting: I want the lights to turn on automatically when someone enters the basement. It’s such a convenience, and I can’t wait to see it in action!

  2. Automatic Shutdown: After my kids finish playing, I’d love the lights to turn off once there’s no motion detected. This will save energy and ensure the basement isn’t left with lights on all day.

  3. Extended Stay Handling: My kids sometimes stay down for a while, and I want the lights to remain on until they leave. This requires a bit of tweaking, but I’m optimistic it can be done with the right setup.

  4. Optimal Motion Sensor Placement: My basement is around 1000 square feet, so I’m wondering how many motion sensors I need and where to place them for the best coverage. Any tips from experienced users would be invaluable!

I’m using SmartThings for this project, and while I’ve had some success with basic automations, I’m eager to explore more advanced configurations. If anyone has advice or has tackled a similar project, I’d love to hear about your experiences and tips!

Let me know if you’ve set up something similar or have any suggestions for improving my setup. Looking forward to your insights and sharing more as I progress!
