Exploring Smart Lighting Automation with Hue Dimmer and LIFX

I’ve been diving into the world of smart lighting automation lately, and I thought I’d share my experiences and some tips for anyone looking to set up something similar.

First, I wanted to integrate my Hue Dimmer with a new LIFX Strip in my bedroom. The goal was to have a single tap turn on the LED strip and a double tap to switch to the Hue bulb. Initially, I was a bit puzzled about how to configure this since the Hue Dimmer only allows for single or long taps. After some research, I discovered that setting up custom scenes in Home Assistant was the key. I ended up creating two separate scenes—one for the LED strip and another for the Hue bulb—and assigned them to the respective taps. It’s been working like a charm ever since!

Another thing I’ve been experimenting with is smooth dimming. I wanted the lights to gradually adjust when the dim button is pressed, rather than jumping to a preset level. This required a bit of tweaking in the settings, but I managed to enable the feature by adjusting the dimming curve in the Hue app. It makes the whole experience feel much more polished.

On a lighter note, I’ve also been impressed by how Alexa has become such an integral part of my daily routine. Whether it’s turning on the lights in the computer room or adjusting the thermostat, it’s amazing how seamless these interactions have become. My dad, who’s in his late 70s, even remarked that it feels like he’s living in the future with his SmartThings setup. It really puts into perspective how far we’ve come in just a few decades.

If anyone has tips on optimizing automation scripts or improving dimming transitions, I’d love to hear them! The community here is fantastic, and I’m always eager to learn more.
