Exploring Smart Lighting Integration: Hue and Lightify Together

Hey everyone, I’m really excited to share my journey of integrating both Philips Hue and Osram/Sylvania Lightify bulbs into my smart home setup. It’s been a bit of a challenge, but also a fascinating learning experience!

First off, I’ve been using Philips Hue for a while now, and I absolutely love the simplicity and reliability of their ecosystem. The ability to create custom lighting scenes and control everything through the Hue app has been a game-changer for me. However, when I came across the Osram/Sylvania Lightify bulbs, I thought it would be great to expand my lighting options with their unique features. Little did I know that this decision would lead me down a path of discovery and problem-solving!

The first hurdle I encountered was the fact that the Hue bridge doesn’t natively support Lightify bulbs. After doing some research, I learned that this is because Hue uses Zigbee Light Link (LL), while Lightify uses Zigbee Home Automation (HA). This was a bit disheartening, but I wasn’t ready to give up just yet. I reached out to Osram to see if they could assist in making the bulbs compatible with Hue, but unfortunately, they mentioned that they no longer offer firmware swaps for this purpose.

This led me to explore alternative solutions, and that’s when I discovered the SmartThings hub. I’ve been wanting to expand my smart home beyond just lighting, and SmartThings seemed like the perfect fit. The real question was: could I use SmartThings to create lighting scenes that include both Hue and Lightify bulbs? After some experimentation, I’m thrilled to say that the answer is yes!

Here’s how I made it work: I kept my Hue bridge for its seamless integration and reliability, while setting up the Lightify bulbs through the SmartThings app. By creating scenes within SmartThings, I’ve been able to control both Hue and Lightify bulbs together, achieving the exact lighting ambiance I was aiming for. It’s been a bit of a workaround, but the results are well worth the effort!

One thing I’ve learned throughout this process is the importance of thorough research and being open to creative solutions. While it might not always be straightforward, there’s usually a way to achieve what you’re aiming for with the right combination of devices and apps.

I’d love to hear from others who have successfully integrated multiple lighting systems into their smart homes. What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them? Let’s continue to learn and grow together in this amazing smart home community!

Cheers,
