As a Deaf couple, we’ve been on a journey to create a smart home that meets our unique needs, particularly when it comes to notifications and alerts. We’ve been researching switches and lighting systems that can flash in response to specific events, such as the doorbell ringing or an alarm going off. This feature is crucial for us, as it ensures we’re never left unaware of important happenings in our home.
We’ve looked into Lutron, Z-Wave, and Zigbee solutions, each with its pros and cons. Lutron offers a sleek and reliable setup, but the cost and the need for multiple hubs make it a bit daunting for a 2,900 sq ft home. Zigbee seems promising, especially for our single-pole switches, but we’re still exploring newer models that might offer better functionality without the bulky design.
One concern we’ve come across is the reliance on third-party hubs like Hubitat for controlling Lutron devices, which could potentially be disrupted by future updates. We’re also curious if there are newer Zigbee or Z-Wave+ switches that might offer the same reliability as Lutron but at a more accessible price point.
We’re leaning toward Zigbee for its compatibility with our existing Z-Wave+ door lock and the potential for seamless integration with Hubitat. However, we’re still on the lookout for flat, aesthetically pleasing switches that don’t compromise on functionality. If anyone has recommendations or experiences to share, we’d love to hear them!
This journey has been both exciting and a bit overwhelming, but it’s inspiring to see how technology can be adapted to meet diverse needs. We’re hopeful that with the right setup, our home will become a safer and more connected space for us.
