Hi everyone, I’m in the process of setting up a home automation system using OpenHAB as part of a property renovation. One area I’m particularly focused on is lighting control, and I’d love to hear your experiences and recommendations.
I’ve been looking into several systems, including Energenie MiHome, Lightwave RF, Sonoff/Tasmota, Philips Hue, and Ikea Tradfri. Each has its pros and cons, and I’m trying to weigh them based on functionality, cost, and ease of integration with OpenHAB.
One thing I’m particularly interested in is finding a solution that allows for module-based control rather than relying on smart bulbs. The property is being rewired, so I have the flexibility to install live, neutral, and switched live wires in all light boxes, as well as 35mm deep boxes for electronics. This setup should provide plenty of space for any modules or switches I choose.
I’ve heard mixed feedback about the Energenie MiHome system. While it seems functional, the binding support in OpenHAB doesn’t seem as robust as I’d like. On the other hand, Lightwave RF offers more advanced features but at a higher price point. Sonoff and Tasmota devices are more budget-friendly, but I’m concerned about their reliability and quality compared to established brands like Philips Hue or Ikea Tradfri.
Philips Hue is a favorite for its ecosystem and app support, but I’m trying to avoid bulb-based solutions. Ikea Tradfri seems like a good middle ground with its affordability and decent functionality, but I’m not sure how well it integrates with OpenHAB.
I would love to hear from anyone who has experience with these systems, especially in terms of their compatibility with OpenHAB and any tips for optimizing their performance. Are there any hidden gems or underrated systems that I should consider? Your insights would be invaluable as I finalize my lighting setup.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and recommendations!
