Exploring Smart Lighting Solutions with Philips Hue and Busch-Jaeger

Hi everyone,

I’ve been diving into the world of smart lighting lately, and I wanted to share my experiences and some questions I’ve come across. I’ve been using Philips Hue bulbs for a while now, and they’ve been fantastic. However, I recently came across a situation that has me scratching my head a bit.

I’m in the UK and was looking to integrate a Busch-Jaeger ZLL power supply insert (6710 U-500) with my Philips Hue bulbs. The idea was to control the bulbs without needing to rewire my existing setup. However, upon removing the old rocker switch, I noticed there was no neutral wire available. Section 5.6 of the Busch-Jaeger manual specifically states that a neutral conductor is required. This has thrown a bit of a wrench in my plans.

I’ve been researching whether it’s possible to inline the Hue bulb with the power supply, essentially using the existing wiring to run the neutral of the power supply to the light fitting or bulb. The manual does provide a wiring diagram, but I’m not entirely sure how to apply it in my current setup. I know Busch-Jaeger also offers battery-powered wall-mounted ZLL transmitters, but I’d prefer to stick with the power supply if possible.

Has anyone else encountered this situation? I’d love to hear if there’s a workaround or if I’m missing something obvious. Maybe there’s a way to adapt the existing wiring without major rewiring? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

On another note, I’ve been experimenting with creating dynamic scenes using OpenHAB. My goal is to have a frame that automatically switches between manual and automatic modes. When in manual mode, I want additional items to appear, such as a time selector and a fan speed controller. I’ve drafted some basic code, but I’m not entirely sure how to implement the dynamic display of these items. If anyone has experience with this or can point me in the right direction, I’d be really thankful.

Lastly, I’ve been exploring the SmartThings ecosystem and have been impressed by its integration capabilities. However, I’m curious about how others handle device identification when using Schlage locks. Each person in my household has a unique code, but the history logs only show when the lock was opened, not who opened it. Is there a way to link the code used to the specific person? This would be incredibly useful for tracking and security purposes.

I’m really enjoying the journey of setting up my smart home, but these little hiccups do occasionally pop up. I’m hopeful that by sharing my experiences and questions, I can learn from the community and maybe even help someone else along the way.

Best regards,
