Exploring Smart Locks and Rule Automation in openHAB

Hello openHAB community! I’m really excited to dive into the world of smart home automation, and I have a few questions and experiences I’d like to share. Hopefully, you can help me out or share your insights!

First, I’ve been looking into smart locks for my home, particularly for my kids who don’t have smartphones yet. I want them to be able to disarm the alarm system easily, but I’m struggling to find a solution that integrates smoothly with openHAB. I tried the NetAtmo Welcome device, but it doesn’t seem to work as seamlessly as I hoped. Does anyone have recommendations for smart locks or RFID tag readers that work well with openHAB? I’d love to hear your experiences!

Another thing I’ve been experimenting with is setting up rules for my thermostat. I’ve managed to get my infloor heating system integrated, but I’m curious about the best practices for creating rules that handle temperature changes with hysteresis. I came across some documentation about profiles and how they trigger alarms when values exceed certain bounds, but I’m not entirely sure I fully grasp how the OFF state is handled once the temperature drops below the lower threshold. If anyone has a more comprehensive explanation or tips, I’d really appreciate it!

On the automation front, I’ve been working on a rule that controls my garage gate. It’s been a bit tricky to get the UI to display the state correctly while also allowing me to trigger the gate manually. I’ve tried using a single switch item, but it keeps toggling incorrectly when the hardware button is pressed. I’d love to know if there’s a smarter way to handle this without needing multiple UI items.

Lastly, I’ve been exploring the Python rule engine to track how frequently my radiator thermostat updates. I want to use this data to keep track of when the batteries need replacing. I’ve run into some issues with time calculations and persistence, but I’m determined to figure this out. If anyone has experience with similar projects or can point me in the right direction, I’d be grateful!

Overall, I’m really enjoying the journey of learning and customizing my smart home setup with openHAB. It’s a fantastic platform, and the community support is invaluable. Looking forward to hearing from you all!
