Exploring SmartThings Device Type Handlers for Leviton Dimmers and Switches

As I continue to expand my smart home setup, I’ve been diving into the world of SmartThings Device Type Handlers (DTHs) to ensure optimal performance for my Leviton Vizia RF+ dimmers and switches. It’s been an exciting journey, but also a bit perplexing due to the sheer number of DTHs available and the lack of clear descriptions. I wanted to share my experiences and insights in case others are navigating similar waters.

Initially, when I added my Leviton devices to SmartThings, the platform automatically selected the ‘Dimmer Switch’ and ‘Z-Wave Switch’ DTHs. However, as I explored further, I noticed that newer DTHs like ‘Z-Wave Dimmer Switch Generic’ and ‘Z-Wave Switch Generic’ were being recommended. This led me to wonder if these newer options would provide the ‘instant update’ feature I was expecting from my Vizia RF+ devices.

After some research, I discovered that the older DTHs, such as ‘Dimmer Switch’, are marked for local execution on V2 hubs, which is a plus for responsiveness. However, they don’t explicitly mention support for Leviton devices, focusing instead on GE models. On the other hand, the newer ‘Generic’ DTHs are optimized for cloud execution, which might not be ideal for those seeking the most seamless and immediate control.

I also stumbled upon the SmartThings GitHub repository, where I reviewed the source code and README files for various DTHs. This was incredibly helpful in understanding which DTHs might be the best fit for my setup. For instance, the ‘Z-Wave Dimmer Switch Generic’ DTH seemed promising, but its reliance on cloud execution was a bit of a downside.

One thing I’m still unclear about is whether the newer DTHs fully leverage the ‘instant update’ feature of my Leviton devices. The README files don’t explicitly mention support for Vizia RF+ models, which has left me a bit uncertain. I’d love to hear from others who might have experience with these DTHs or from SmartThings themselves to clarify the situation.

In the meantime, I’ve been experimenting with different DTHs to see which one provides the best balance of functionality and responsiveness. It’s a bit of trial and error, but that’s all part of the learning process! If anyone has insights or recommendations, I’d be thrilled to hear them. Happy smart home tinkering! :rocket:
