Hey everyone, I’ve been diving into the world of SmartThings Labs lately and wanted to share my experiences with you all. I’ve been creating virtual devices using the SmartThings Lab Virtual Device maker feature, and while the process has been mostly smooth, I’ve encountered a few hiccups along the way.
One thing I’ve noticed is that when I create a virtual switch in SmartThings Labs, I can’t seem to trigger a routine off of it in Alexa. I know this is possible because I’ve created over 20 virtual devices in the IDE for my leak detectors in the past. Those were set up to trigger routines in Alexa, so I’m confident it’s achievable. However, with the new virtual switch creator, it seems like this functionality is either missing or I’m overlooking a setting somewhere.
On the Alexa side, the virtual device is recognized as a switch, not a light, and my existing leak detector routines are still intact. This leads me to wonder if there’s a limitation with the new virtual switch creator or if there’s a specific setting I need to enable in the IDE. I’m leaning towards using the IDE more for creating virtual switches since it seems more reliable, but I’d love to hear if anyone else has encountered this issue or found a workaround.
In the meantime, I’ve been experimenting with different configurations and settings to see if I can get the virtual switches to trigger routines in Alexa. It’s a bit frustrating, but it’s also a great learning opportunity. If anyone has any insights or tips, I’d be grateful to hear them!
On a positive note, I’ve been impressed with how versatile SmartThings Labs is. It’s opened up a whole new realm of possibilities for automating my home, and I’m excited to continue exploring its capabilities. Whether it’s creating virtual devices or integrating different smart home components, there’s always something new to discover.
If anyone has tips or tricks for working with virtual devices or Alexa routines, please share them below. Let’s collaborate and make the most out of these tools together! ![]()
