Exploring SmartThings Security and MQTT Lock Integration

Hi all, I’ve been diving into the world of smart home security lately, and I wanted to share my experiences with the SmartThings platform. Just last week, I set up the SmartThings V2 home monitoring kit, and I must say, I’m quite impressed with the progress they’ve made. The ability to function without internet connectivity is a huge plus for me, especially in areas with spotty coverage.

I armed the system and tested it by disconnecting the internet. Triggering a door sensor worked seamlessly, and the outlet responded as configured. While I don’t have a siren to test that feature, I’m hopeful that whitelisted sirens will work just as well. Kudos to the SmartThings team for the advancements!

However, there are still a few things on my wish list. A keypad for local arming and disarming, delayed arming, and different entry zones would take this system to the next level. I’m also curious about any updates on these features and whether the Iris keypad integration is on the horizon.

On a different note, I’ve been experimenting with MQTT for more granular control over my smart devices. One project I’m particularly excited about is integrating an MQTT lock for my garage door. The idea is to have the lock respond to commands sent via TCP, which would allow for more flexible automation scenarios. I’ve been tinkering with the sensor.tcp component and even wrote a bit of code to handle the communication, but I’m still hitting a few roadblocks. If anyone has experience with listening on TCP ports for commands in Home Assistant, I’d love to hear your insights!

Another area I’ve been exploring is scene automation based on weather conditions. I came across the Wunderground Weather Plugin and the Virtual Outdoor Temperature Plugin, and I’m trying to decide which one would be the best fit for my setup. I’d appreciate any recommendations or experiences others have had with these plugins.

Overall, it’s been a fascinating journey into the world of smart home security and automation. I’m excited to see how these platforms continue to evolve and offer even more functionality. If you’ve got any tips, tricks, or experiences to share, I’d love to hear them!

Cheers,
