Exploring the Benefits of Jumbo Frames in a 10Gig Network

I’ve been really impressed with how Jumbo Frames have transformed my home network setup. For those who haven’t heard about it, Jumbo Frames allow for larger data packets to be sent over your network, which can significantly improve performance, especially on high-speed connections like my 10Gig network.

To give you an idea of the difference, without Jumbo Frames, I was only achieving around 3.5 GB/s on my 10Gig connection. After enabling them, I saw a nearly doubling of that speed, almost reaching 7 GB/s. This has been a game-changer for tasks like backing up large image files from my NAS to my Plex server. The reduced latency and increased throughput make a world of difference!

However, I was initially concerned about compatibility issues, especially with my Hubitat setup. I isolated it behind a managed switch that allows me to disable Jumbo packets, ensuring none make their way to the Hubitat. So far, no problems at all. It’s a simple tweak that has paid off immensely.

If you’re on a high-speed network, I highly recommend exploring Jumbo Frames. The setup is straightforward—just a matter of configuring your switch and network interfaces—and the benefits are well worth it. Let me know if anyone has questions or experiences to share!
