Exploring the Potential of Intel Atom Systems for Home Assistant

Hey everyone, I’ve been exploring some older hardware for potential use with Home Assistant, and I wanted to share my findings and thoughts with the community. I stumbled upon an old POS terminal with an Intel Atom D2700 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 15-inch touchscreen. It seems like a cool device, but I’m curious about its practicality for Home Assistant tasks.

I’ve installed Ubuntu Mate 20.04 on it, and while the system runs smoothly, the sound functionality is currently off the table. I’m wondering if anyone has experience using similar terminals for Home Assistant projects. Would it be feasible to use this as a remote display or for other Linux-based tasks? I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

On a related note, I’ve been experimenting with integrating various devices into my smart home setup. For instance, I recently set up a Shelly Plus 1 to control a dimmer switch with a push button. The challenge was figuring out how to handle both the on/off functionality and the dimming feature without conflicting with the auto-on settings. After some trial and error, I found a workaround that allows me to toggle the light with a short press and adjust the brightness with a longer hold. It’s been a fun learning experience!

I’m also curious about others’ experiences with outdoor lighting solutions. I’ve been looking into using Govee LED strips for some festive decorations, but I’d love to hear if anyone has successfully integrated them with cameras or other systems for a unified lighting display. The possibilities seem endless, and I’m eager to dive deeper into these projects.

Lastly, I’ve been exploring the world of DIY smart home projects. If anyone has suggestions for interesting DIY ideas or resources, I’d be grateful to hear about them. Whether it’s building custom sensors, automating routines, or repurposing older hardware, I’m all ears!

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to hearing your insights and experiences. Happy tinkering! :rocket:
