Exploring the Potential of Smart Plugs and Motion Sensors

As a long-time enthusiast of home automation, I’ve been experimenting with integrating various smart devices into my daily life. Recently, I’ve been particularly impressed with the Aeotec Multi 6 motion sensor and the Neo Coolcam power plug. Both devices have proven to be reliable workhorses in my smart home setup, but I’ve encountered a few quirks that I’d like to share and discuss with the community.

My Setup and Experience
I’ve installed the Aeotec sensor in my bathroom to monitor humidity levels and motion, while the Neo Coolcam plug controls a ventilation pump in the attic. The system is designed to activate the ventilation when humidity exceeds 60%, unless motion is detected, as the pump can be quite noisy. Most of the time, this setup works seamlessly, but there have been a couple of hiccups.

The Issues

  1. Motion Detection Glitch: Last night, the Aeotec sensor stopped detecting motion entirely. The green LED didn’t blink even when I waved my hand in front of it. This isn’t the first time this has happened—it’s occurred a few times over the past few months. Interestingly, the sensor always starts working again after a short while. I’m curious if others have experienced similar behavior and if there’s a known fix or workaround.

  2. Plug State Mismatch: This morning, the Neo Coolcam plug’s state didn’t match its actual operation. The interface showed it as OFF, even though the ventilation was running. Toggling the switch turned off the ventilation as expected, but I’m puzzled as to why the state became misaligned in the first place. Has anyone else encountered this issue, and if so, how did you resolve it?

Logging and Troubleshooting
I don’t have logs from the incidents since they were brief and the logs have been rotated. I’d love to know if there’s a way to configure openHAB to log to a syslog server for future reference. This would make troubleshooting much easier.

Community Insights
I’d be grateful for any suggestions or insights from those who might have encountered similar problems. Whether it’s a hardware issue, a software glitch, or a configuration error, I’m eager to learn more and find a solution. Let’s hear from those who have successfully resolved these types of issues or have tips for preventing them!

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your thoughts and experiences!
