Exploring the Potential of SmartThings and Ubi Integration

I’ve been diving into the world of smart home integration lately, and I must say, the journey has been both exciting and enlightening. One of the most intriguing setups I’ve come across is integrating Ubi with SmartThings. While Ubi offers a lot of capabilities on its own, the real magic happens when you start linking it with other ecosystems like SmartThings.

Recently, I decided to take the plunge and get myself an Ubi device. After some persistence, I managed to get onto the Ubi beta list for SmartThings integration. It’s been a fascinating experience so far. The integration isn’t perfect yet, but the potential is immense. For instance, I’ve been using Ubi to control my SmartThings devices via voice commands, which has made my life a whole lot easier.

One of the most satisfying projects I’ve worked on recently was setting up an advanced integration between Ubi and SmartThings. I wanted to create a system where saying “Good night” to Ubi would trigger a series of actions in SmartThings. Here’s how it works:

  1. Voice Command: I say “Good night” to Ubi.
  2. Virtual Tile Activation: Ubi responds and turns on a virtual on/off tile in SmartThings.
  3. Automation: A custom app I wrote checks this tile. When it turns on, it does three things:
    • Checks if any selected doors are open. If so, it turns on another virtual tile.
    • Checks if any selected windows are open. If so, it turns on yet another virtual tile.
    • Schedules a procedure to run in 5 minutes, which turns off all selected lights and resets the virtual tiles.
  4. Feedback: If the door or window tiles turn on, Ubi provides feedback by saying, “You have a door open” or “You have a window open.”

This setup might seem basic, but it demonstrates the powerful potential of integrating Ubi with SmartThings. It’s like giving my SmartThings setup a voice and ears, making my home truly responsive to my commands.

While there are still some kinks to work out, the progress so far has been encouraging. I’m excited to see how this integration evolves and what other possibilities it unlocks. If you’re into smart home automation, I highly recommend exploring Ubi and SmartThings integration—it’s a journey worth taking!
