Exploring the Potential of Z-Wave LR for Outdoor Sensors

Hey everyone, I’m diving into the world of Z-Wave LR for my outdoor sensor setup, and I wanted to share my journey and experiences so far.

I’ve been using traditional Z-Wave devices for a while now, but with my gate being about 25 meters away from my house, I’ve hit a snag with reliability. After experimenting with various technologies like WLAN, Zigbee, and even some 433 MHz sensors, I realized that Z-Wave LR might be the solution I’ve been searching for.

I came across the Zooz outdoor sensor and their USB dongle hub, which seem promising. From what I understand, Z-Wave LR offers a high link margin, which should handle the distance and walls between my gate and the hub. However, I’ve read that there are some nuances when it comes to EU frequencies (868 MHz) versus the US standards (900+ MHz). I’m curious if anyone has experience with firmware modifications for EU compatibility or if there are any potential pitfalls I should be aware of.

I also heard that approvals for Z-Wave LR in the EU were expected during the first or second quarter of 2025, but I haven’t found any concrete information on the current status. If anyone has insights or recommendations on this, I’d be thrilled to hear them.

Another thing I’m pondering is whether there are alternative options or workarounds if Z-Wave LR isn’t feasible right now. I’m open to suggestions and would love to hear about others’ experiences with outdoor sensors and their setups.

In the meantime, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Z-Wave LR will be the reliable solution I need for monitoring my gate. Fingers crossed for a successful setup!

Looking forward to your thoughts and experiences!
