Hey everyone!
I’ve been diving into the world of home automation lately, and it’s been an incredible journey. From setting up smart lighting to automating my morning routine, there’s so much potential to make life easier and more convenient. However, as someone who’s just starting out, I’ve found that understanding the capabilities of automation can be a bit overwhelming. ![]()
One thing I’ve been particularly curious about is how to create more complex automations that go beyond the basics. For example, I’d love to set up a system that sends me a notification if my garage door has been left open for more than 30 minutes, and then repeats the notification every hour until it’s closed. Or maybe something that monitors power usage and alerts me if a sensor detects high energy consumption. ![]()

I’ve been experimenting with different approaches, like using state changes to trigger notifications or setting up time-based checks. But I’m not entirely sure which method is more efficient or reliable. If anyone has tips or resources that could help me understand the rules and capabilities better, I’d be thrilled to hear them! ![]()
Another thing I’ve been exploring is the use of predicates for tracking changes in power states. For instance, I have a dishwasher connected to a Kasa power monitoring plug, and I’d like to receive a notification if the power drops below a certain threshold for an extended period. It seems like predicates could be the key here, but I’m still figuring out how to implement them effectively without running into issues with hub variables. ![]()
If anyone has successfully set up similar automations or has advice on best practices, I’d love to hear your experiences! Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other unlock the full potential of home automation. ![]()
