Exploring UART Expansion for Multiple Zigbee and CCU3 Devices

Hi all,

I’m relatively new to Home Assistant and home automation, but I’ve managed to set up a decent system with several Miio devices, a Mi-Hub with AlexxIT firmware, and some Sonoff devices. Now, I want to expand my setup by adding support for generic Zigbee and CCU3 devices. I’m currently running HassOS on a Raspberry Pi 4B, and I’m looking to integrate both a Raspbee II and an HM-MOD-RPI-PCB for HomeMatic support. However, both of these devices require UART communication, and my Pi only has one UART port.

I came across the Waveshare Serial Expansion HAT, which seems like a potential solution. This HAT would allow me to use two UART ports, enabling communication with both the Raspbee II and the HM-MOD-RPI-PCB simultaneously. I’m curious if anyone here has experience with this setup and if it works seamlessly with Home Assistant. I know there’s a Conbee II USB stick that works well, but I’d prefer to keep all my components in the same case for a cleaner setup.

I’ve also been looking into the pinout configurations for both devices to ensure compatibility with the Serial Expansion HAT. If anyone has successfully implemented a similar setup or has any tips, I’d greatly appreciate the insight. It would be fantastic to have all my devices integrated without any communication issues!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,
