Hello everyone, I’m new to the world of smart home automation and I’m really excited to share my experiences and learnings with all of you. I recently purchased a Vera2 system and I’m in the process of integrating some Z-Wave devices, specifically the Kwikset Z-Wave locks. This journey has been both fascinating and a bit challenging, and I wanted to document my thoughts and questions here.
First off, I’m absolutely thrilled with how Vera2 has been performing so far. It’s been a breeze to set up, and the interface is quite intuitive. However, I have some questions regarding the integration of my Z-Wave devices. I’ve heard that sometimes you need to “exclude” devices from their original controllers before adding them to Vera2. Does anyone have any advice on whether this is necessary, or if it’s better to reset the devices to their factory defaults before including them?
Another thing I’ve been reading about is the concept of “primary” and “secondary” controllers. I’m not entirely sure I understand how this works, especially in the context of Vera2. If someone could explain this in simple terms, I’d be really grateful. Also, I’ve noticed there’s a firmware update available for my Leviton VRCPG controller. Is this something I should prioritize? And if so, is it better to update it myself using the ControlThink USB stick or send it back to Leviton for an update?
On a more positive note, I’ve been experimenting with creating group switches on Vera2. The idea is to have a master switch that controls multiple lights, like the ‘Upstairs Lights’ group I mentioned earlier. This would allow me to toggle all the lights in a specific area with just one command, while still being able to control individual lights if needed. It’s a feature I’m really looking forward to implementing, and I’m hopeful that Vera2’s setup will make this straightforward.
I’d also love to hear from anyone who has successfully integrated Z-Wave locks with Vera2. Are there any tips or tricks you’d recommend? And for those of you who’ve dealt with multiple controllers or firmware updates, how did you handle those situations?
Thank you all in advance for your insights and advice. It’s amazing to be part of such a supportive and knowledgeable community!
