As a long-time user of Home Assistant, I’ve always been on the lookout for reliable ways to access my setup remotely. I’ve been using an SSH tunnel addon to connect my HassOS instance to a Docker container on my VPS, which works decently but can be finicky at times. A friend suggested WireGuard, and after some research, I decided to give it a try.
The experience has been enlightening! WireGuard’s simplicity and ease of setup are impressive. I managed to run a single container for multiple Home Assistant instances, which is a huge plus for scalability. However, I encountered an issue where the 8123 port for the web interface wasn’t accessible, despite the 4357 port working fine. This confusion led me to explore alternative solutions like ZeroTier and Tailscale, but I’m glad I stuck with WireGuard to understand its inner workings better.
One thing I’ve learned is the importance of thorough configuration and network testing. While WireGuard might not be the perfect solution for everyone, it’s definitely a solid option for those looking for a more robust and flexible remote access setup. Plus, knowing that I can rely on WireGuard as a fallback if other services go down gives me peace of mind.
If anyone has tips or tricks for getting WireGuard to work seamlessly with Home Assistant, I’d love to hear them! Let’s share our experiences and troubleshooting tips to help each other out. ![]()
