Exploring Wyze Outdoor Camera Compatibility with Existing Networks

Hey everyone,

I’ve been really impressed with Wyze cameras for their quality and affordability, but I’ve hit a snag with their outdoor models. I’ve invested a lot of time and effort into setting up a robust outdoor wireless network across my six-acre property using POE WAPs mounted on trees. It’s been a challenge, but I’m thrilled with the coverage now. However, I’m puzzled by Wyze’s requirement for their specific base stations for outdoor cameras.

In their FAQ, they mention that the base station improves battery life and provides a reliable internet connection via Ethernet, while also addressing compatibility issues with different routers. But I’m not entirely convinced. How does using a Wyze base station reduce battery consumption more effectively than any other WAP? Most WAPs have RJ-45 ports, so unless there’s some bridged network magic, I don’t see why Wyze cameras can’t work with existing setups. Also, what exactly are these compatibility issues they’re referring to? If it’s about older routers not being fast enough, why not just specify the supported protocols or frequencies?

I’d love to use Wyze outdoor cameras, but without compatibility with my existing network, it’s a tough sell. Has anyone found a workaround or have insights on this? I’d really appreciate any suggestions or experiences shared!

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,
