Exploring Z-Wave and Zigbee Compatibility in My Smart Home Setup

I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and I must say, it’s been an exciting journey! As someone who’s relatively new to this space, I’ve been experimenting with both Z-Wave and Zigbee devices to create a seamless and reliable system. However, there’s one question that’s been on my mind lately: Does Z-Wave always require a Hub? I’ve heard wonderful things about Insteon, where devices can communicate even without a hub, but I’m curious if Z-Wave offers the same level of independence. From what I understand, Z-Wave devices rely on a hub to manage communication between them, but I’d love to confirm this. If they do need a hub, which one would you recommend for a stable and efficient setup? I’ve come across a few options, but I’m not sure which one would best suit my needs. On the other hand, I’ve also been exploring Zigbee devices, particularly after hearing some mixed reviews about their reliability. I’m currently using Homey as my primary platform, but I’ve encountered some instability issues with Zigbee devices. I’m wondering if there’s a way to enhance this by using a Zigbee USB dongle on my Synology NAS with Docker. This way, I could potentially create a more robust Zigbee network and integrate it back into Homey for rule management. Speaking of reliability, I’ve also been experimenting with routines to automate my lighting system. It’s been working beautifully for the most part, but I’ve noticed some unexpected behavior with virtual switches. They seem to toggle on and off randomly, even when the initial triggers aren’t met. I’m using the Android version of the app to create these virtual switches, and I’m not sure if there’s a setting or adjustment I’m missing to prevent this from happening. Any insights or tips would be greatly appreciated! Another area I’m exploring is the integration of LED child devices with my Lutron keypads. I’ve managed to get most of my keypads working smoothly, but there’s one 15-button keypad that’s giving me a bit of trouble. The issue seems to be with creating enough child devices to match the number of buttons. I’m hoping there’s a workaround or a tweak that can help me overcome this limitation. Overall, it’s been a fascinating process, and I’m learning so much along the way. The community support has been invaluable, and I’m excited to continue expanding and refining my smart home setup. If anyone has experiences or advice to share on these topics, I’d love to hear from you!
