Exploring Z-Wave Interference and Long-Range Device Setup

As a homeowner who’s deeply into integrating smart home devices, I’ve been experimenting with multiple Z-Wave hubs and long-range devices. It’s fascinating how these technologies can transform daily life, but there are certainly challenges to overcome.

One issue that’s piqued my curiosity is the potential interference between multiple Z-Wave hubs operating in close proximity. I have a primary hub and a backup, both running separate Z-Wave networks, and I’ve noticed some quirks when adding long-range devices. Specifically, my backup hub, which I recently upgraded to a C8, has been giving me a hard time with long-range (LR) device inclusion. The error message “Z-Wave device id: 0 failed S2 bootstrapping - Unknown status code - the device needs to be excluded then included again to use securely.” keeps popping up, which is both frustrating and perplexing.

I’ve tried everything from radio resets to using after-market antennas, but the problem persists. My hypothesis is that the proximity of the two hubs might be causing interference, but I’m not entirely sure. Could it be that the antennas are affecting how LR devices pair? I’ve been pairing the devices right next to the hub, so it shouldn’t be a range issue.

Another angle I’m exploring is the firmware and radio settings. I’ve done multiple resets and even enabled diagnostic tools, but nothing seems to resolve the issue. It’s almost as if the backup hub has a lingering configuration from its previous state, despite being reset.

I’m reaching out to the community to see if anyone else has encountered similar issues or has insights into resolving this. Have you successfully integrated multiple Z-Wave hubs without interference? What steps did you take to ensure smooth operation, especially with long-range devices? Any advice or shared experiences would be invaluable!

On a more positive note, I’ve been impressed by how Z-Wave devices can be seamlessly integrated into a smart home ecosystem. The ability to troubleshoot and learn from each challenge is part of what makes this journey so rewarding. I’m hopeful that with some community input, I can get those LR devices up and running smoothly. Thanks in advance for your insights!
