Exploring Z-Wave Plus and Zigbee for Reliable Home Automation

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with upgrading my Schlage Connect smart deadbolts. After reading about the latest certifications for Z-Wave Plus and the introduction of Zigbee versions, I decided to dive deeper into the pros and cons of each to make an informed decision.

I’ve been using Z-Wave for a while now, and while it’s been reliable, I’ve encountered occasional delays in status updates, especially when tracking lock and unlock events. From what I understand, this is because the locks aren’t Z-Wave Plus certified, meaning they don’t support instant status updates and rely on polling from the hub. This can be a bit frustrating, especially when trying to monitor the state of my locks in real-time.

Now that Z-Wave Plus versions are available, I’m curious about the improvements they bring. The instant status updates sound like a game-changer, potentially eliminating the delays I’ve experienced. However, I’m also intrigued by the Zigbee option. Zigbee has a reputation for being more robust and less prone to interference, which is a concern in my home given the number of devices operating on the 2.4GHz band.

I’ve built out my Zigbee network quite a bit, but with multiple Wi-Fi APs, Sonos speakers, and other mesh networks, I worry about interference affecting performance. On the other hand, the backbone seems solid, and I’ve had good experiences with Zigbee sensors and outlets. Still, I’m hesitant to switch entirely due to the potential for overcrowding in the 2.4GHz spectrum.

I’d love to hear from others who have experience with both Z-Wave Plus and Zigbee. What factors influenced your decision? Have you noticed significant differences in reliability or performance? Any tips for ensuring a smooth transition or optimizing network performance would be greatly appreciated!

This has been a fascinating journey, and I’m excited to see how these technologies continue to evolve. Thanks in advance for your insights and recommendations!
