Last night our house was woken up by a false smoke alarm on one of the Aqara smoke detectors. Luckily I was home and could silence the alarm, but this is obviously not okay at all.
Searching the forum I noticed that more people had a similar problem. Is there by now a good solution for this in order for it not to happen again?
Is anyone in your home smoking or vaping? The smoke detector has an optical sensor that checks how well the particles in the air refract light. The detector itself doesn’t have a nose, it cannot differentiate between cigarette smoke and real fire.
Depending on the location of installation it can give false positives (for example gases and particles can accumulate in a corner and the detection will not be accurate).
According to many reviews and experiences of people on the forum, those detectors tend to give false positives, but no false negatives. And personally I prefer to get a few false positives once a year or so than to get a false negative. A smoke detector shouldn’t ignore any kind of smoke, and overreacting is a good thing as it’s a device that ensures my safety
There was no smoke or whatsoever in the room where the detector gave a false alarm. I’ve had other brand smart detectors in my home for over 7 years and never a false alarm.
Then you have certainly been unlucky, I have 4 units from 2022 (CN version) and 3 units (Eu version) from 2024/2025 (same with the predecessor Mi/Honeywell 8 units) and have not had any false alarms.
