I’m really on the fence of buying the U400, I see all the awesome reviews, the use of UWB and how great it is. My question are:
-
I have the Aqara G410 doorbell, can I use that as the hub? I also have 4 Apple HomePods and an AppleTV. Sorry the hub issues confuse me.
-
My current Yale lock, keeps giving me a lock jammed error even though it’s not, I think it’s because the bolt rubs inside the lock part in the door frame. Would I have the same issue with the U400?
The only reason I’m on the fence is the cost but not because I think it’s too expensive it’s because not sure I can justify replacing my current lock if it’s still working… but I really want to… but I can’t… or can I???

I think it’s worth it. If you have issues with the alignment with the door frame you can always make adjustments.
As far as the hub, I believe it needs to be a matter hub with a thread router. I’m not sure if the G410 hub will work. I bought the Aqara M100 USB dongle which works perfectly and is inexpensive. For the homepods, only the HomePod mini and HomePod 2nd gen are thread routers, not the 1st gen.
Also the Apple TV4k needs to be the Ethernet one that supports thread. If you have at least one of those it should work, but if not then that M100 dongle works great.

Thanks, my neighbour has a Yale lock too and he’s having the same jamming problem. Especially in the winter. Maybe it’s snow getting into the doorframe. I’ve been sending him information about the U400, I wonder if I can get a discount for suggesting it to him
As for the hub, the G410 states it is a “Hub for Matter & Aqara Zigbee Devices”, would that mean I can use that instead of the dongle? Either way it’s not really an issue, I’ll figure that part out when I get a chance… I just came back from the store in -15C windy weather and had to take off my gloves to unlock the Yale. I’m pretty sure a few more times that happens, I’ll be ordering one LOL

A quick Google search shows the g410 hub is also a thread router so that should work. I haven’t looked into it too much though.

I think I’ll buy an Aqara Smart Hub M3 hub anyways. I’d like to replace my smart devices to Matter ones. Thanks for the reply.

Update: I bought the U400 and the Hub M3 off Amazon. I’m getting it tomorrow, can’t wait.
This is my plan for my home setup:
Home Layout
- Three levels:
- Entrance level (front door located here)
- Main level
- Upstairs
Network Topology
- Upstairs:
- Main router + modem
- ZenWiFi AX node (wired)
- Main level:
- ZenWiFi AX node (wireless mesh)
- AppleTV 4k wired to ZenWifi AX
- Entrance level:
- ASUS RP-AX56 extender / mesh node
All nodes are on the same LAN:
192.168.50.0/24
Smart Home Stack
- Home Assistant (Docker on Ubuntu) = primary brain
- Apple Home = front-end UI, notifications, cameras
- Apple TVs + HomePods act as Thread border routers
- No HomeBridge
- Devices paired once, then shared outward
Target architecture:
Matter / Zigbee → Aqara Hub → Home Assistant → Apple Home
Planned Aqara Hardware
- Aqara Smart Hub M3
- Aqara U400 Matter Lock
- Aqara G410 Doorbell (already installed)
Proposed Hub Placement
- Mount Smart Hub M3 on entrance level, near ceiling or top of stairs
- Approximately 6–8 feet from the front door
- Ethernet connection preferred:
- RP-AX56 LAN port → Smart Hub M3
Goal:
- Strong Zigbee/Thread/BLE signal to lock and doorbell
- Avoid relying on doorbell’s built-in hub for lock
Pairing Order (Planned)
- Install Smart Hub M3
- Pair U400 lock to M3 in Aqara app
- Expose lock to Home Assistant (Matter or Aqara integration)
- Share lock to Apple Home via HomeKit Bridge
