Fibaro Motion Sensor Integration Troubleshooting & Tips

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with integrating the Fibaro Motion Sensor FGMS-001 with my SmartThings HUB V2. While the process seemed straightforward at first, I encountered some unexpected challenges that I thought I’d walk through in case others are facing similar issues.

Initially, I followed the official support guide to the letter, but the sensor just wouldn’t connect. Frustrated, I tried the “General Device Exclusion” process, only to find that the steps were outdated for the newer SmartThings app. I then attempted the “Z-Wave Exclude” method via the online API, carefully following the instructions to triple press the sensor’s button. Despite this, the system only logged that the exclude mode had been initiated without any further progress.

The live logs weren’t much help either, showing only generic messages like “getPhrases(), state.welcomeIssue = null”. The HUB Events indicated that the exclude search had started and ended, but no device was found. I even went as far as resetting the sensor according to the user guide, but nothing changed.

After some research, I discovered that many users faced similar issues with Z-Wave devices not pairing correctly. Some suggested trying a different Z-Wave channel or ensuring the sensor was within range of the hub. I also came across advice about resetting the hub’s Z-Wave settings, which involved holding down the reset button for 10 seconds. While this didn’t solve the problem outright, it did give me a fresh start to try the pairing process again.

What finally worked for me was using the “Z-Wave Inclusion” method instead of exclusion. I made sure the sensor was in close proximity to the hub and carefully followed the inclusion steps. After a few attempts, the sensor connected successfully!

This experience taught me the importance of patience and persistence when dealing with smart home setups. It also highlighted the value of community support—without the tips I found online, I might still be stuck. If anyone else is struggling with similar issues, I’d recommend checking out the official forums or reaching out to the community for advice. Happy troubleshooting!
