Hey everyone, I wanted to share a fun project I recently completed to monitor my pool temperature in Home Assistant. I’ve always been curious about combining different components to create something useful, and this little experiment turned out to be a great success!
To make the probe, I used a Fibaro FGK-101 Z-Wave door/window sensor, which has internal connections for a DS18B20 temperature probe. I connected the probe, wrapped the sensor in plastic to make it waterproof, and left the probe dangling free. I placed the whole setup in a floating chlorine dispenser designed for pools. These dispensers have holes in the bottom for the probe wire, so it worked out perfectly.
The probe floats around nicely and sends the temperature readings to Home Assistant. I’ve configured it to update every 15 minutes, and after a couple of months, the battery is still showing 100% charge. Eventually, I plan to seal the door sensor in a small waterproof box and fix it under the pool edge with the probe dangling in the water. But for now, my proof of concept is working beautifully!
It’s been a fantastic way to keep an eye on the pool temperature without any hassle. I love how Home Assistant integrates all these sensors and makes monitoring so seamless. If anyone has similar projects or tips for improving this setup, I’d love to hear about them!
Cheers, and happy tinkering! ![]()
